Grew up in Huntington Beach and was a multi-sport athlete at Edison High School, where he is a member of the Alumni Hall of Fame.

Orange Coast Junior College

All-American tackle — inducted into the Orange Coast Athletics Hall of Fame (2016) and the California State JC Football Hall of Fame (2021).

UC Berkeley two-sport letterman

Earned All-Coast honors in football and was selected to the U.S. National Rugby Team out of Cal.
